The Cybennax Enthusiast had a 5,400-rpm hard disk and a 3Dfx Voodoo Banshee. We received the Compaq Presario 5600s. Which included a 450-MHz. AMD clued us in to a bug in the system's chip set. The performance of a graphics card varies significantly depending on the proficiency of the driver. I'll be upgrading the graphics card on my Compaq Presario SR5518F (already made sure the card I got was compatiable).

Before I come and do something for the card, I have to ask you a few questions.

1.) should I uninstall the graphics card drivers

2.) should I uninstall the card in general

(3.) when I get the graphics card installed, is it safe to install the drivers in safe mode or normal mode?

Yes, before you install the new video card, you should go to Device Manager, click to expand the display of the maps, right-click in the graphics section and select uninstall.

Drivers

Depending on the operating system that you are running, if there is a driver uninstall box to check, check this box.

Instead of restarting the PC, simply close it down, unplug it, install your new video card and you should be all set, and as Eric posted, you install the new drivers in Windows 'normal' mode

If you lose your integrated audio system (you can according to the model) If your new video card has an HDMI output port, you will need to go into BIOS, find the onboard audio setting.

It will be either automatic or off value.

Change the setting to 'Enabled'. Save the setting it by hitting the F10 key and again when you go out.

After reboot and return to windows, you should have the on-board audio back.

    You can go for a VGA card exceeding not power consumption 75 w which is the limitation of PCIe slot. I also recommend the upgrade of power. If the VGA up to 75w (like nVidia GF530 or 540) I would like to go at least 300W PSU and more than 400W or more would be appropriate. Maps on 75W have connector 6 extra pins to provide a separate power to the VGA card.

    The fact is that Toshiba to recommend to use the Toshiba graphics card drivers because this driver has an overheating protection. These drivers one specially designed for the use of the laptop and it s not recommended to use any other rivers that are designed for desktop use.

    If you use other drivers, you can do so at you own risk!

  • Hi!, I have motherboard ECS P4M800Pro M2 Ver2.0, 2.2 GHz E4500 processor Intel Core2DUO, DDR2 533 MHz 2 GB RAM hardware with WINDOWS 8 32 Bit operating system. The motherboard has 64 MB S3 UniChrome Pro IGP.

    Further to have better graphics during the game, I bought recently NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 256 MB AGP 8 x video card. Since I installed this card, windows has installed its driver game by default 'Microsoft generic display drivers' and the quality of the graphics is off nominal. Also the 1366 x 768 resolution widescreen is currently not available. The best resolution I have now is 1024 x 768. In this resolution, the graphics of Windows seems very strange on my LG 19 'widescreen monitor.

    I tried to install the graphics card drivers on the NVidia site for the old version of Windows, but the drivers are installed with an error message 'Pilot' not Compatible with this Version of Windows.

    By default windows drivers has release date older than the drivers supplied on OEM for Windows XP.

    Please help me to get the drivers for the AGP card compatible with my Windows 8 Pro.

    Windows 8 compatibility reports that NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 graphic card is compatible with Windows 8. Check out the link

    You can check if you have downloaded the 64 bit version of the graphics driver rather than 32-bit. It could be the possibility for this error message.

    Or select the option on the Nvidia site to scan your system to find the correct driver?

    If you still receive an error message that the driver is not compatible, then you try to install the driver in compatibility mode.

    If this does not help, I suggest you check with the NVIDIA support.

    I installed Windows 7 Home Premium. All the drivers have been installed with the exception of the video card. The drivers are supposed to be 100 NF - Spp nForce 430 go. I tried to install the drivers on the Nvidia driver page, but they would not install. Anyone know where I could find the right drivers for the video DART? If not, is it possible to upgrade the video card? I would like to be able to do graphic editing, but right now I can't yet run the bubble screen saver.

  • It woun't connect to internet using a good modem and cable (other PC connect successfully using this same equipment). When I type IPCONFIG, I get 2 results, one for Local Area Connection2 for LAC3. Two of them have 169.254.xxx.xxx IP addresses. Both Suffixes DNS blank and empty default gateways.

    When I go into network connections, the LAC2 says 'Limited or no connectivity', but it lists a Linksys LNE 100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter. Linksys? I don't have any Linksys product. LAC3 says 'Connected' with the help of a WAN network driver. However, in the Notification area network connections has the same yellow triangle as LAC2. When I right click the icon in the Notification area and select 'Repair' I always get the following '.' following action cannot be completed: renewing your IP address.

    If I right click LAC3 (the one that says 'Connected'), click Properties, click TCP. IP and select Properties, it is set to get an IP address and an address of DNS server automatically. It is also the same for LAC2.

    Client DHCP, DNS Client and call the CPP are started.

    I tried ipconfig/release, ipconfig/registerdns, ipconfig/flushdns, netsh winsock reset. When I run it ipconfig / renew I get messages (after he is sitting there for 2 minutes)

It only reads limited connectivity or none and is using Linksys LNE 100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter, like the previous LAC2. The previous LAC3, who uses the network never got WAN driver reinstalled. I don't understand.

    Since an adapter Linksys on a wired connection seemed odd I have tried to find what should be the correct network driver.

    I google 'Compaq Presario 5400US' 'driver ethernet' OR 'network driver' and was taken to a page of drivers HP, which I think makes sense since HP now owns Compaq

    Depending on the size of file, it does not resemble an auto install file. Accept the agreement and unzip the file into a folder.

    So, download it to a folder and go to Device Manager.

    Click the network card in need of drivers, and then select manual search for drivers. Navigate to the folder where you extracted the drivers and the driver should install.

    You should be fine with this card as it meets the specifications of your P/S and has the x 16 PCIe form factor.

    I also like that it is a nVidia card, which should play nicely with your card chipset mother nVidia.

    Because it has a HDMI port, it can disable your integrated sound card when you install it.

    Be not dismayed.

    Simply go into your BIOS, search for the audio setting on board. Change auto to 'Enabled'. Save the setting here and when you exit the BIOS.

    Then you'll once again on board sound and audio HDMI when you connect a TV to your PC with a HDMI cable.

Create recovery disk for Compaq

Computers shipped after the spring of 2003 were equipped with a recovery partition that can be used to restore your computer.

However, a set of recovery discs can also be created using the software provided by Compaq (or HP) if you don’t have these discs already.

Create recovery disk for Windows XP

If you don’t have the recovery software provided by Compaq or HP, download our recovery and repair disk for Compaq or HP computers.

If you haven’t created the discs already, it’s strongly recommended that you do so.

Drivers

The Recovery CD-DVD Creator software can be used to create the discs for your computer.

This software can be used to create only 1 set of recovery discs. If you already created the set, you won’t be able to create a new disc.

If you don’t have the Recovery CD-DVD Creator software installed and neither the recovery partition intact, you can use your original Windows XP installation disk or go to Download recovery disk for Compaq.

Several notes about the software before you continue:

Compaq Presario Audio Driver Download

  • If you already created a set of discs already, Recovery CD-DVD Creator will not allow you to create a new set of discs
  • You need to use blank and writeable CDs or DVDs. It’s recommended that you use blank CD-Rs or DVD+Rs, and not DVD-Rs.
  • You may need up to 10 CDs or 2 DVDs
  • The recovery partition of your Compaq PC must be intact in order for the recovery software to work
  • It may take up to 10 or 15 minutes per CD

If you can boot into Windows XP, follow these steps to create the disk:

  1. Boot into Windows XP
  2. Close any open programs, disconnect from the Internet
  3. Go to Start > All Programs
  4. Go to Compaq > Compaq PC Tools (or PC Help & Tools) > Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator
  5. Click Continue at the Welcome screen, if this is the first time you open this software application
  6. Recovery CD-DVD Creator will now show what type of media you can use, how many CDs or DVDs you need and prompts you for a selection
  7. Select a option and click OK
  8. Insert the CD or DVD and click OK
  9. Wait for the process to finish. Do not power off your computer or disconnect the power cable.
  10. You’ll be prompted to insert the next CD or DVD until the process is 100% complete. Insert the discs and click OK to load it.
  11. Click OK when the creation process is complete

If you’re not able to boot into Windows XP, you can also use Command Prompt to launch Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator to create the discs. However, your recovery partition must be intact in order for this software to work.

The steps are:

  1. Turn on the computer and press the F10 key before the Compaq logo appears
  2. Choose Advanced Options
  3. Press and hold the Alt key, then press D and then release both keys. The Command Prompt should now appear on your monitor.
  4. Type d: if your computer has no memory card reader integrated. If it does, type h: instead
  5. Press Enter
  6. Type cd windows
  7. Press Enter
  8. Type cd creator
  9. Press Enter
  10. Type the following command, including the quotation marks and the space:
  11. Press Enter
  12. Click Start Creation or Next
  13. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete to create the discs

Create recovery disk for Windows Vista

If you don’t have the recovery software provided by Compaq or HP, download our recovery and repair disk for Compaq or HP computers.

The Recovery Disc Creation software can be used to create a set of recovery disks for Compaq computers shipped with Windows Vista.

Similar to the Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator software for Windows XP, the Recovery Disc Creation software for Windows Vista has a few limitations:

  • You can only create 1 set of recovery disks for each computer. If you already create the disks, you can’t create them a second time.
  • The software requires that your computer to the recovery partition intact and undamaged
  • It’s recommended to use blank DVD+R discs, if supported by your PC

The steps to create a recovery disk for Windows Vista on a Compaq computer are:

  1. Boot into the system
  2. Close any open software, disconnect from the Internet
  3. Go to Start > All Programs
  4. Then go to PC Help & Tools > Recovery Disc Creation
  5. At the Welcome to the Recovery Manager screen, click Advanced Options to continue
  6. Insert your first blank DVD in the disk tray. You can also use CDs.
  7. Once inserted, click Next. If AutoPlay opens, close it.
  8. Continue with the process until 100% finished and follow any on-screen instructions left to complete the process

If you receive this message when trying to create a set of discs, it means that you already created a set of discs and you won’t be able to create them again:

If you don’t have the recovery software provided by Compaq or HP, download our recovery and repair disk for Compaq or HP computers.

You can create a recovery disk for Windows 7 on a Compaq computer using the Recovery Disc Creation (alternative name can be Recovery Media Creation) already installed on your system.

If you have the Recovery Disc Creation software installed, you can use discs (DVDs) only as a recovery media. If you have the Recovery Media Creation installed, then you can also use USB flash drives as a recovery media: DVDs or USB flash drives.

A few notes before you begin:

  • You can only create the recovery media once. If you already created a recovery media, the software will not work to create the media again
  • CDs are not compatible. Use only DVD+R discs
  • If you want to use a USB flash drive, use a USB flash drive that is has a maximum of 32GB and it’s not branded as Windows 8 compatible.

    Windows 8 compatible USB flash drives have this logo on their package:

To use DVDs as a recovery media for Windows 7, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on the computer
  2. Close any open programs and disconnect from the Internet
  3. Go to Start
  4. Type recovery manager
  5. You can also find this software at All Programs
  6. Open Recovery Manager
  7. If the UAC window opens, click Yes to confirm that you want to open this software
  8. If you have the Recovery Disc Creation software, click Next to continue. If you have the Recovery Media Creation software, select Create recovery media using blank DVD(s) and then click Next to create the recovery media on DVDs.
  9. Prepare the number of discs required to complete the process. See how many you need at “Number of Discs Required”.
  10. Insert the first disc, then click Next
  11. Click Next to begin
  12. If you’re prompted to add another disc, insert it in the disc tray, close it and click Next to load it and continue with the process
  13. When all the discs have been successfully created, remove the last disc from the disc tray and click Finish

To use a USB flash drive as a recovery media for Windows 7, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on the system
  2. Go to Start and type recovery manager
  3. Open the Recovery Manager software
  4. If the UAC opens, click Yes to confirm that you want to launch Recovery Manager
  5. You can only use USB flash drives if you have the Recovery Media Creation software. If so, select create recovery media with a USB flash drive and click Next. If the software title is Recovery Disc Creation, you’ll only be able to use DVDs to create the set of discs.
  6. Plug-in the USB flash drive
  7. Select the location drive of the USB flash drive
  8. A verification message will appear. Confirm that you want to continue with process by clicking OK.
  9. When the “Recovery Manager successfully create the recovery media” message appears, click Finish

Restore a Compaq computer

Restore Windows XP

You can restore the Windows XP operating system on a Compaq computer by using the Compaq PC System Recovery software, the recovery partition available on your computer or the set of recovery discs.

If you can boot into Windows XP

If you don’t have the recovery software provided by Compaq or HP, download our recovery and repair disk for Compaq or HP computers.

Compaq Presario 5000 Series Drivers

If you can boot into Windows XP, follow these steps to begin a restore process:

  1. Backup your files before you continue with this
  2. Turn on your computer
  3. Remove all external devices from your computer
  4. Go to Start > All Programs > Compaq Tools (or Compaq Help & Tools) > Compaq PC System Recovery
  5. Click OK to start the restore process
  6. You can select what type of recovery you want: System Recovery or Destructive Recovery.

    A Destructive Recovery erases everything on your computer and installs Windows XP again.

  7. Follow any on-screen instructions left to do to complete the process

If you can’t boot into Windows XP

If you don’t have the recovery software provided by Compaq or HP, download our recovery and repair disk for Compaq or HP computers.

If your recovery partition is intact, you can perform a recovery from this partition without booting into Windows XP:

  1. Turn on the computer
  2. Press the F10 key repeatedly until you see the “Starting PC Recovery” message
  3. Select what recovery to perform: Standard System Recovery or Destructive Recovery
  4. Follow any instructions of the wizard left to do to complete the process

If you have a set of recovery disks available, use these to perform a restore of your computer:

  1. Turn on the computer
  2. Press the Esc key when the Compaq logo appears
  3. Insert Disc #1 in the disc tray
  4. From the “Please select boot device“, select the CD or DVD media drive so your system boots from the disc
  5. If prompted to opt for “Recovery Options”, press R
  6. Depending on your computer, select what type of restore you want to perform:

    R for a standard system recovery
    F for a destructive recovery
    Q to quit the process

  7. Follow the next set of instructions to complete the process

Restore Windows Vista

There are 3 ways to restore a Windows Vista operating system on a Compaq computer:

  • Launch the Recovery Manager software from within Windows Vista
  • Launch the Recovery Manager software on startup by pressing the F11 key
  • Use the recovery discs at hand when booting the system

If you can boot into Windows Vista

If you don’t have the recovery software provided by Compaq or HP, download our recovery and repair disk for Compaq or HP computers.

To restore your PC from within Windows Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Boot your computer and then go to Start
  2. You can either type recovery in the search field and select Recovery Manager from the search results list or go to All Programs > Recovery Manager > Recovery Manager
  3. Click Advanced options, then System recovery and then click Next
  4. If you don’t have an Advanced Options button, click Next and select System Recovery.
  5. Your computer should restart now
  6. After the restart, select System recovery and click Next
  7. If you are being asked to choose for “Microsoft System Restore”, choose No and click Next
  8. Select Backup your files first (recommended) and click Next

    The recovery process will erase all your personal files. Backup your files before you continue.

  9. Follow the next set of instructions to complete the process

If you can’t boot into Windows Vista

If you don’t have the recovery software provided by Compaq or HP, download our recovery and repair disk for Compaq or HP computers. Puffy amiyumi show.

If you can’t boot into Windows Vista, you can launch Recovery Manager during the start-up process:

  1. Turn on your computer
  2. Press the F11 key before the Compaq logo appears on your screen
  3. When the Recovery Manager software launches, select Advanced Options > System Recovery and click Next

    If you don’t see any Advanced Options button, simply click Next and then select System Recovery.

  4. Follow the instructions to continue with the process

If you have a set of recovery discs, follow these instructions instead:

  1. Insert the first disc in the optical disc drive
  2. Start the computer
  3. When prompted, at the “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD” message, press any key to boot from the CD or DVD
  4. When Recovery Manager has launched, click Advanced Options > System Recovery and click Next
  5. Continue following the instructions to complete the process

Restore Windows 7

There are 3 types of recovery you can perform on a Compaq computer with Windows 7 installed:

  • System Recovery
  • Factory Reset
  • Minimized Image Recovery. This is available certain models of HP netbooks.

If you can boot into Windows 7

If you don’t have the recovery software provided by Compaq or HP, download our recovery and repair disk for Compaq or HP computers.

If you can boot into Windows 7, follow these steps to perform a restore process:

  1. Turn off the computer
  2. Disconnect all devices, except your power cord, monitor, keyboard and mouse
  3. Turn on the computer
  4. Go to Start > All Programs > Recovery Manager > Recovery Manager. Or you can type recovery in the search box to find the software.
  5. If UAC (User Account Control) appears, click Yes to open the software program
  6. Under the I need help immediately section, click System Recovery
  7. Click Yes to confirm that you’d like to restore your computer to its original settings

    This process removes all personal files from your computer. Backup your files before you continue!

  8. Click Next
  9. Your computer will now restart
  10. After the restart, Recovery Manager will open again
  11. Click System Recovery
  12. If you already created a backup of your personal files, select Recover without backing up your files and click Next
  13. Click OK at the warning screen
  14. Wait for the process to finish
  15. Click Finish, when the process is complete to restart the process

If you can’t boot into Windows 7

If you don’t have the recovery software provided by Compaq or HP, download our recovery and repair disk for Compaq or HP computers.

If you can’t boot into Windows 7, use the recovery partition installed on your Compaq computer to perform a restore:

  1. Turn off the computer and disconnect all peripherals: scanners, printers, card readers etc.
  2. Turn on the computer
  3. Press the F11 key repeatedly before the Compaq logo appears
  4. At the I need help immediately section, select System Recovery

    This process deletes all your personal files. Backup your files before you continue!

  5. Select Recover without backing up your files and click Next, if you already created a backup of your files.
  6. Click OK
  7. Wait for the restore process to finish
  8. Click Finish when this process is complete
  9. Turn off your computer
  10. You can now connect the peripherals back to your computer
  11. Follow the on-screen instructions to setup Windows 7 again

If you have a set of recovery DVDs for your Compaq, follow these instructions:

  1. Turn on the computer, but make sure all non-essential devices and cables are removed. Keep only the power cord, keyboard, monitor and the mouse.
  2. Insert the first disc in the disc tray
  3. Press the Esc key repeatedly until a Startup Menu or Select Boot Device Menu is displayed on your screen
  4. When this screen appears, select the CD/DVD option and hit Enter
  5. If prompted to run Recovery Manager from the hard drive or the set of discs, choose Run program from disc and click Next
  6. At the I need help immediately section, click Factory Reset
  7. Click Yes and then Next to confirm the selection
  8. You can select to backup your files if you haven’t done so. Otherwise, simply select Recover without backing up your files and click Next to continue to the next step.
  9. Click OK to confirm
  10. Insert the next DVD in the disc tray when prompted
  11. At the Restoration complete screen, click Finish
  12. When the process is complete, your computer will restart or shutdown
  13. Setup Windows 7 again by following the instructions on the screen

If you have a USB flash drive as a recovery media for your Compaq, follow these steps:

  1. Remove all non-essential devices and cables from your computer: scanners, printers, cameras, card readers etc.
  2. Insert the USB flash drive
  3. Turn on the computer
  4. Press the Esc key repeatedly
  5. Wait for a Select Boot Device Menu or Startup Menu screen appears
  6. Select USB Storage Device and hit Enter. If the screen is titled “Startup Menu”, you may need to press F9 to open the Boot Menu screen.
  7. If prompted to run the Recovery Manager software from the hard drive or the USB flash drive, choose the USB flash drive option and click Next
  8. Click System Recovery under the I need help immediately section
  9. Click Yes
  10. Choose to backup your files if you haven’t done so. Otherwise, select Recovery without backing up your files.
  11. Click Next
  12. Click Next again to confirm
  13. At the Restoration complete screen, you may be asked to remove the USB flash drive. Remove it.
  14. Click Finish
  15. Your computer will now restart or shutdown
  16. Turn on your computer back and continue setting up Windows 7 again

Compaq Application and Driver Recovery

The Compaq Application and Driver Recovery software allows you to restore a piece of software application or a driver originally installed with the computer.

Compaq Application and Driver Recovery can only be used if:

  • You didn’t upgrade the operating system
  • You didn’t removed the recovery partition from your computer

To install applications that shipped with a Compaq computer, follow these instructions:

  1. Turn on your computer
  2. Go to Start > All Programs
  3. Find the Compaq PC Tools folder. Alternative names can be: PC Help and Tools, PC Recovery Tools or Compaq PC Help & Tools
  4. Select Compaq Application Recovery
  5. Select Application Installation
  6. Click Next
  7. Select what software to install
  8. Click Install
  9. Once the installation is complete, click OK
  10. Click Quit
  11. Restart the computer

To install drivers that shipped with a Compaq computer, follow these instructions:

  1. Turn on your computer and go to Start > All Programs
  2. At the Compaq PC Tools folder, select Compaq Application Recovery
  3. Select Driver Installation
  4. Select what drivers to install
  5. Click Install
  6. Continue with the on-screen instructions to complete the process

If a specific driver is already installed and you want to reinstall it, you must uninstall it first:

  1. Right-click My Computer
  2. Select Properties
  3. Go to the Hardware tab and select Device Manager
  4. Select the driver you want to uninstall and right-click on its name
  5. Select Uninstall
  6. Once the uninstall process is complete, click OK and restart your computer
